Spring Planting Temps

Air temps need to stay above 50 at night or provide cover before sun goes down.

Soil temperatures need to be 60-65 degrees F and rising at the 4 inch soil depth before you plant summer crops. Current soil temps 0 to 4 inches: https://www.greencastonline.com/tools/soil-temperature

The goal is to trap and hold the natural ground heat around the plant. Don’t wrap a plant like putting a coat on a person. Plants don’t generate heat, the ground is where the heat is coming from. The more tent like with ground under the cover – around the plant – the better. Make sure the plant cover is tight to the ground so heat doesn’t escape. An external heat source can be added under the tent. A single incandescent light bulb can generate enough heat for freezing temps. Non LED Christmas lights can work too.
