Disease and Pest Notes
Use 10 day cycle Bt injections (large guage needle) and diatomaceous earth to prevent squash vine borers, along with insect netting until blooms start. Wrapping with foil is another method suggested but but it seems the borer moths could get access and still lay eggs. ??? In addition to the BT, foil stem wraps, I treated the soil with BT in the fall and turned the soil every week to kill any eggs that are in the soil. ???
If you’re tired of fighting squash bugs and the squash vine borer all summer, delaying your planting might just be the best way to get a great harvest without the bugs. Plant your seeds about 8-10 weeks before your first fall frost (in my Zone 7 garden, that’s late July) and enjoy a relatively bug-free crop with a harvest just in time for fall.

Planting details
Temperatures in the 32-50F range make squash languish with unhappiness. When temperatures are steadily above 90F, squash flowers may fail to set fruit. Typical North American summer highs of 70-85 with nighttime lows of 50-70 are perfect for squash.

Note: Seed starting and transplant dates do not always correlate one to one with dates shown below. Note correct start and expected transplant dates on the tag of the tray for seed germination. Adjust dates with plant tags on a yearly basis if necessary. 8 ounces of fertilizer is about 1 cup. Consider Sustane various NPK and Alfalfa Meal or Blood Meal for nitrogen.
